FAQ

General Questions

What is Belle Bones Co.?
Belle Bones Co. is a woman-owned business focused on turning ethically sourced animal remains into custom art. I combine science, restoration, and craftsmanship to create unique pieces that honor each animal.

How did you get into this work?
I’ve always had a love for animals, bones (thanks, anthropology!), and detailed craftsmanship. This business grew from combining those passions into something creative and meaningful.

Ethical & Sourcing Questions

Where do you get your skulls and bones?
All materials are ethically sourced. That means no animals are killed for my work—everything comes from natural deaths, hunters, or legal sources.

Do you work with customer-provided animals?
Yes! I offer services for remains provided by clients (like hunting trophies or found specimens), as long as they are legally obtained.

Cleaning & Preparation

What is dermestid beetle cleaning?
Dermestid beetles are used to naturally clean skulls by removing all soft tissue without damaging the bone. It’s one of the most precise and preservation-friendly methods.

Do you offer skull cleaning services only?
Yes, I offer cleaning as a standalone service, as well as full restoration and mounting options.

How long does cleaning take?
Turnaround time varies depending on the condition and size, but most projects take several weeks.

European Mounts & Restoration

What is a European mount?
A European mount is a cleaned and whitened skull, typically displayed on a wall or plaque.

Do you repair damaged skulls?
Yes. I offer restoration services including whitening, repairs, and structural fixes when possible.

Custom Work

Do you do custom designs?
Absolutely. I can incorporate carving, leather, chains, jewelry, and other artistic elements to create a one-of-a-kind piece.

Can I request a specific design or theme?
Yes! I love working with clients to bring their ideas to life while keeping the integrity of the piece.

Process & Orders

How do I place an order?
You can contact me directly through this website under the “Contact” tab or by the social media platforms listed on the homepage.

Do you require a deposit?
Yes, a deposit will be required for custom work. It will depend on desired outcome and type/size of skull.

What is your turnaround time?
It depends on the service and complexity, but I’ll give you a time estimate before starting your project.

Legal & Shipping

Is it legal to ship skulls and bones?
Most common species are legal to ship within the U.S., but some restrictions apply. I’ll help guide you through that process.

Do you accept out-of-state clients?
Yes! Just reach out and I can walk you through shipping your item safely.

Belle Bones Co. operates in full compliance with all federal and state wildlife laws. Due to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (MBTA), I do not work with bird skulls or any protected migratory bird species. Additionally, all materials are carefully reviewed to ensure they are not listed under endangered or protected species regulations. It is the responsibility of both the client and Belle Bones Co. to ensure all specimens are legally obtained and eligible for possession and transport.

Care & Display

How do I care for my piece?
Keep it in a dry environment, avoid excessive moisture, and handle with care. I’ll provide care instructions with your order.
